NBC Orders Top Gear Pilot From BBC
(released
Wednesday, January 16, 2008)
By Douglas Lorah
NBC has ordered a pilot for the long running hit series Top Gear from BBC Worldwide America. Top Gear originally started in the United Kingdom in 1977 and was started back up again five years ago to much success.
The show features super-cars, extreme stunts, time trials, and road tests.
Ben Silverman, Co-Chairman of NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios, says that the show "fits perfectly into the NBC lineup of programming with male appeal, including Sunday Night Football and American Gladiators."
This type of move could be a way for the major studios to continue to find programming while the WGA writers strike continues. Buying shows from overseas is a normal practice, but it will be interesting to see if it increases in frequency as pilot season approaches.
