Charlie Kaufman is known for films like Synecdoche, New York, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. In recent years, he penned Anomalisa and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. He makes dreamy, imaginative stories.
On Thursday, February 9th, IFC Center let members view a short film from Kaufman called Jackals & Fireflies. It is a short film that is visually intertwined with a poem by Eva H.D. Charlie and Eva also worked together on I'm Thinking of Ending Things.
Jackals & Fireflies is the poem spoken by Eva and illustrates life in places and on the streets of Toronto and New York City. Because the poetry was spoken by the poet, the inflection and emphasis felt like it was done in all the right places.
Even though there was a full film crew, the entire film was shot on a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. I don't know if the look and feel was done in post or if its native to the phone, but it had a warmth that harkens back to film and video.
Eva H.D. was in attendance for the screening as was Charlie Kaufman. Kaufman did a Q&A with Vox film critic Alissa Wilkinson and he also fielded questions from the audience.
