The duo of Spike Lee and Denzel Washington is back for a fifth time. They are currently filming High and Low, which is codenamed Royalty on the Film Shoot signs you may see around the city. They have been shooting about 3 weeks now.
High and Low is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film by the same name, which was originally adapted from the Ed McBain novel King's Ransom. That may be where the codename Royalty comes from.
Lee co-wrote the script with Alan Fox and Lee is also directing and executive producing through his 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks. The film is produced by A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures. It will be released in theaters before launching on Apple TV+.
Also joining on the film are actors Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, American Fiction) and Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem, Billions) as well as rapper Ice Spice.
The gist of the story, following the Kurosawa lead, would be that a board member for a company is forced to make a decision between using a vast amount of wealth to gain executive control and helping his employee by lending him the money to free his child from kidnappers.
