NEW YORK ON FILM a series presented by The Downtown Alliance / LM LIVE will feature the film "THE APARTMENT" with Molly Haskell and Imogen Sara Smith on Tuesday, December 3, 2024. The screening will take place at 6pm and includes a talk back that is expected to conclude at 9pm. This is happening at the Alamo Drafthouse Lower Manhattan.
The film allows you to step back into 1960's Manhattan with stars Jack Lemon and Shirley MacLaine. Lemmon plays an ambitious office worker who lends his apt to company executives for extramarital affairs, in hopes of climbing the company ladder. Life gets more complicated when he meets Shirley MacLaine's character Fran, an elevator operator fighting her own company problems with powerful men. Comedy, dark, reflective, love, ethics and loneliness appear in the film's scenes.
After the film, Haskell and Smith will examine Billy Wilder's New York in both a place of isolation and of possibility. They plan to dissect the film's nuanced portrayal of gender and power. Workplace dynamics, gender equality, a discussion how these matters remain relevant with modern audiences.
Tickets are $5 and include popcorn and a beverage. All proceeds will be donated to a charity of the speaker's choice. There is no assigned seating so seats will be first come, first serve basis. Find your ticket here:
