Movies Under The Stars Expands to More NYC Parks
(released
Thursday, August 13, 2015)
By Kimberly Burke
Movies Under The Stars will extend its public offerings into the five boroughs this year and bring more NY film to New Yorkers. Throughout the city, 150 films are programmed to project outdoors in parks. NYC parks encourage bringing a picnic, a blanket then finding a spot to enjoy cinema, being outside, and the stars in the sky over your neighborhood park.
"We want all New Yorkers to experience the fun and novelty of watching a film outdoors right in their own neighborhood," said Commissioner Cynthia López, Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment. "The films and TV shows that shoot on location in New York City have not only left an indelible mark on our culture; they also employ thousands of New Yorkers behind the scenes and contribute billions of dollars to our local economy. By bringing 'Movies under the Stars' to more parks in all five boroughs, this is our opportunity to thank residents for hosting filming in their community and provide New Yorkers with increased access to cultural programming."
Kicking off the "Movies under the Stars" expansion is the independent documentary Mad Hot Ballroom on Wednesday, August 19, 2015. The screening will be a special 10th anniversary screening with director, Marilyn Agrelo, producer Amy Sewell, and some of the film's participants who've grown up to become college graduates and work in varying professions. J. Hood Wright Park in the Washington Heights neighborhood will be the host location. The movie begins at dusk.
