The 49th Annual Asian American International Film Festival starts today July 30th and runs through August 9th. Put on by Asian CineVision, it is the longest running festival showcasing work from filmmakers of Asian descent.
The beginning half of the festival runs at the Asia Society located at 725 Park Avenue on the east side. The second half runs at Village East located at 181-189 Second Avenue in the East Village. And there are a few events sprinkled at places like Sugar Mouse and Moonzescope.
The festival opens with Para Perasuk (Levitating) from Indonesian filmmaker Wregas Bhanuteja, who will be in attendance for a Q&A following the film. This is the first time the movie has screened in New York City. It held its world premiere at Sundance. Levitating is about Bayu who dreams of becoming the shaman of a trance party in order to raise enough money to prevent his village from being evicted. Following the film and Q&A, the Opening Reception will take place at The Astor House.
There are plenty of films screening throughout the festival as well as a screenplay reading, trivia night, fundraising masterclass, and a CUNY student showcase.
