First Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema

Kew Gardens Film Festival will kick off Friday, August 4, 2017 at Austin Ale House Trackside Cafe by the Long Island Railroad station in Kew Gardens. There will be a plaque dedication at 8:00p.m. honoring Rodney Dangerfield, presented by Friends of Maple Grove with beer tasting from Queens breweries from 9-11p.m.
Admittance is free with an RSVP, but seating will be first come first serve for the fesival opening. Rodney Dangerfield grew up in Kew Gardens and was known for his catchphrase "I don't get no respect." Dangerfield was a regular on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dean Martin Show, Miller Lite beer commercials, and 22 movies in addition to a stand-up career and having the successful nightclub Dangerfield's.
Throughout the 10 day festival, Kew Gardens Cinema, Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens, and Queens Museum will serve has host venues. More than 150 films from 24 countries will screen at this inaugural festival. Several Queens films will be screened including the World Premiere of Forest Hills filmmaker Louie Cortes' GOOD DAY, Kew Gardens Hills resident Jermaine Manigault's short narrative LANGUAGE IS DEAD, Woodhaven's Robert Vornkahl has his feature film NOWHERE, MICHIGAN and short film from Long Island City resident Rick Hamilton, CHOICES.
Panel discussions will commence on August 12 starting at 1:30p.m. in The Center of Maple Groves Cemetery. Three one hour sessions are planned. Topics scheduled are:
- Wonder Women - the challenges and importance of women in independent film
- Film Distribution in the modern day and age featuring sponsor Synimatica and other distribution professionals
- Production Resources- making the most of your low budget
