Firehouse Cinema Opens in Chinatown

(released 9/25/2022)

Firehouse Cinema opened this past Friday at the Downtown Community Television Center in Chinatown. DCTV was founded in 1972 and the cinema marks its 50th anniversary.

As you enter the cinema, you are immediately struck by the front of an antique fire truck. Little hints of an old firehouse decorate the walls lending to the motif.

We were there for the first screening at 7pm and it smelled like walking into a new house. They have their very own carpeting with the DCTV logo. The lighting in the screening room is very dramatic with red light emitting behind large naturally cut wood planks.

For its opening night, they had the New York premiere of An American Dream and Other Fairy Tales.  The movie was introduced by DCTV's Director of Programming Dara Messinger. Attending the screening and others this weekend were its co-directors Abigail Disney and Kathleen Hughes. After the movie, they answered questions by film critic Tomris Laffly and audience members.

You can see photos from the opening night and a full video of the Q&A that followed the Friday screening event.

Upcoming screenings at Firehouse Cinema include Coming To You (with filmmaker Byun Gyu-ri), I Didn't See You There (with filmmaker Reid Davenport), and special screening events with Meerkat Media Collective, Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective, and a Vimeo Staff Picks. Check out their offerings on their website at www.dctvny.org.
