DuVernay's The 13th to Open New York Film Festival

Ava DuVernay's documentary The 13th will be the first non-fiction work to open the New York Film Festival. The World Premiere event will begin the 54th year of the festival on September 30. The 17 day festival will run until October 16, 2016. The 13th focuses on the United States producing the highest incarceration rate in the world. The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the experience of incarceration, and prison as an industry are tested in her film.

New York Film Festival Director and Selection Committtee Chair Kent Jones thinks Ava DuVernay's film is "an act of true patriotism." The 54th NYFF selection committee includes:
  • Dennis Lim, Film Society's Director of Programming
  • Florence Almozini, Film Society's Associate Director of Programming
  • Amy Taubin, Contributing Editor, Film Comment and Sight & Sound
  • Gavin Smith, Consultant
Tickets for the 54th NYFF are scheduled to go on sale Septemeber 11, 2016. Opening night is going to be held at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Film Society membership at the Film Buff level will give you access to earlier tickets.
