"In The Heights" will have it's world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival 2021 as the opening film. In a release from the festival regarding the opening night, the film's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda said "It is such an honor to open the 20th anniversary Tribeca Festival with In the Heights. We're so excited to welcome them uptown! This will be an unforgettable night at the United Palace. We can't wait to share this musical love letter to our community, with our community, in our community."
The festival plans to broadcast the film across all five boroughs opening night at multiple outdoor venues.
The 2021 festival marks the 20th anniversary and is not only a celebration of art but a return to community as they usher in live events.
Taking place June 9-20, the festival's feature lineup has been announced and includes 66 films from around the world. Of the films programmed, 60% of this year's films are directed by women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ filmmakers. Films that were scheduled to premiere at the 2020 film festival, but postponed due to Covid 19, will also screen at this year’s festival.
