(released 6/23/2022)

BAMcinemaFest starts tonight, June 23rd and runs through Thursday, June 30th. All of the screenings take place at BAM Rose Cinemas, part of the Brooklyn Academy of Music complex in Brooklyn. Some of the highlights include opening film Aftershock, Ferny & Luca, Swerve, and Alma's Rainbow.

The opening night film Aftershock is a documentary by filmmakers Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee. It follows the preventable deaths due to childbirth complications of two families and brings to light the maternal health crisis in the US. Aftershock screens Thursday, June 23rd.

Ferny & Luca is a rom-com by Director Andrew Infante. The film is set in pandemic-era New York, specifically following a hot and cold relationship in Brooklyn. Ferny & Luca screens Friday, June 24th.

Swerve is a short film part of Shorts Program 2 playing on Sunday, June 26th. Swerve was directed by Lynne Sachs. It is a cinematic telling of Paolo Javier's Original Brown Boy poems at a food market and playground in Queens. This is its world premiere.

Alma's Rainbow is the first feature from Ayoka Chenzira. Known for her socially conscious films that challenge stereotypes about Black culture, Chenzira's film is a coming-of-age dramedy that highlights a group of middle-class Black women living in Brooklyn. The screening is paired with her short film Hair Piece: A Film for Nappyheaded People. They screen on Monday, June 27th.
