Writer, producer, and actor Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) has created and written Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This will be a new series exclusively for Amazon Studios that is based on the New Regency film from 2005 of the same title that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, grossing 487 million worldwide during it's release.
Originally slated to be a project between Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project at this time last year. Glover will also serve as executive producer, with co-creator and executive producer Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo) who will also serve as show runner. Executive producers also include Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer (New Regency), and Jenny Robins (Wells Street Films). Glover is acting in the lead role (Mr. Smith) and his co-star is Maya Erskine (Obi-Wan Kenobi, PEN15).
Said Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer of New Regency: "Having had the pleasure of successful collaborations with the incredibly talented Donald Glover, most recently on Guava Island, we all started talking about other projects to do together and when he suggested the idea of a new take and iteration on the New Regency film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, we jumped at the chance to get going right away."
The series was sighted filming in the East Village back in June of 2022 and as of September 15, were spotted rolling in talent trailers on Maiden Lane in the downtown Wall Street area, as they continue to shoot in the city.
