A special advanced movie screening: YOUNG WOMAN and the SEA will be taking place Wednesday, May 29, 2024. You are invited to join NYC Parks and Disney for this advanced film about Gertrude Ederle. The screening from 7-9pm is free and open to the public and will be held at the AMC Lincoln Square (1998 Broadway @ West 68th Street NY, NY).
Gertrude Ederle was an American swimmer. Gertrude was the first woman to swim the English Channel and beat the men's record for doing so by two hours. She participated in the 1924 Paris Games and at 18 years old received one gold in her team event and two bronze medals in her singles events. Her accomplishments made a lasting contribution to women's sports during the 1920's decade in which gender roles were shifting.
The
Gertrude Ederle Recreation Center opened in 2013 on Manhattan's Upper West Side located at 232 W 60th Street NY, NY 10023. The recreation center was named after Gertrude and includes an indoor swimming pool.
The film YOUNG WOMAN and the SEA is biographical and based on the book of the same name by Glenn Stout. The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer for Paramount Pictures. The rights to the film later were acquired by Walt Disney Pictures for Disney+. Daisy Ridley plays Gertrude Ederle in the film.
