Made In NY Award: Steve Buscemi

(released 12/17/2014)

Steve Buscemi has Brooklyn roots and has grown into a storyteller. After graduating high school, Steve, like his other siblings, tested for civil service positions in New York City to find their niche. Steve found his peers in the Fire Department of New York City. The FDNY proved to be more than a steady paycheck in his four years on the department.

Buscemi left the Department to further his aspirations of acting. He made a name for himself among indie filmmakers and fans in Fargo and Reservoir Dogs. His face made it into the cast of Sopranos, a production from NY, that ultimately used his nature for direction. While directing the Sopranos, he was nominated for an Emmy and a DGA award.  Buscemi has also directed episodes of 30 Rock and Nurse Jackie. In 2008, Buscemi became a producer partnering with Stanley Tucci and Wren Arthur forming Olive Productions. HBO's Boardwalk Empire is where Steve Buscemi's star as an actor shined brightest. The series lasting five seasons has brought attention to this leading actor in the form of a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild awards and two Emmy nominations.

Park Bench a "talking show" is an Olive Production created in collaboration with Radical Media for AOL. Buscemi sits at various park benches throughout his hometown having conversations with friends and celebrities exploring the city through the people. In 2014, Park Bench was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Short-Form Non-Fiction.

Returning over the years to the firehouse to support fallen comrades and work voluntarily on shifts in the recovery efforts of 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy, Buscemi has extended his personal experience into his art. A Good Job: Stories of the FDNY allows you to see first hand the experience of the men and women in the FDNY.
