By Kimberly Burke
Louis CK was honored with a 2014 Made In NY Award at the Weylin B. Seymour Building in Williamsburg on Monday, November 10th.
Louis CK is a stand up comedian who made Hollywood executives pause when he took his business of the show to the internet and sold tickets directly to his audience. Louis's business plan amassed a following the powers that be could not ignore, thus setting a new standard for which other artists continually strive to replicate.
With his 2011 online release of Live at the Beacon Theater, CK grossed over $1 million by selling downloads at $5 apiece. In January 2014, CK released Tomorrow Night, a 16mm B&W he shot in 1998 with a few friends you'll recognize. It is also downloadable for only $5 here. He takes risks with providing downloadable files with no digital rights management, but he asks people not to torrent his files.
Heading into his fifth season of Louie, a Peabody Award winning series for FX, CK serves as executive producer, writer, director, and editor. Nominated for 25 Emmy Awards including wins for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for working on Louie and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his stand up comedy specials. CK has been recognized with numerous comedy awards, a 2012 Grammy, and named "Comedy Person of the Year" at the 2011 Just for Laughs Festival. CK is also nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award for his show Oh My God.
Louis CK lives in New York and uses his voice to advocate for art and music in NYC public schools.
