Spike Lee promoting Da Sweet Blood of Jesus

(released 2/18/2015)

Dat guy from Brooklyn has a new joint!  That's right, Spike Lee is out promoting his latest film Da Sweet Blood of Jesus.  He was at the Apple Store in SoHo on Monday, February 9 with the lead actress Zaraah Abrahams.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a remake of the 1973 blacksploitation film Ganja & Hess.  The above the line credits are quite interesting on this film.  Spike Lee wrote the film, but he co-wrote it with Bill Gunn, who wrote and directed the original Ganja & Hess.  By the way, Bill Gunn died in 1989.  Spike directed.  That's standard.  The other interesting credit is producer.  Spike clearly put it together, but there is no executive producer in the traditional sense.  This film generated its funding through crowd sourcing, specifically Kickstarter.

Spike put out the call for 1.25 million dollars on Kickstarter back on July 22, 2013.  30 days later, he was funded with 1.42 million.  As of the time of this writing, it has the fourth highest generated funds for a film on Kickstarter.  Veronica Mars starring Kristen Bell raised 5.7 million in 2013, Zach Braff's I Wish I Here raised 3.1 million in 2013, and Eric Falconer's Blue Mountain State raised 1.9 million in 2014.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus first hit VOD on Vimeo in January.  It is screening on a limited release pattern in major markets including the Walter Reede (Lincoln Center) and the Village East as of February 13th.  When asked why the film first released on Vimeo, Lee said that you have to embrace technology.
