The Athena Film Festival 2017 has released the program of screenings. A quick reference of what is planned for the February 9-12, 2017 festival:

CITY OF JOY chronicles the women of the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo who have survived sexual violence. This centerpiece film of the Athena Film Festival 2017 will document the place that opened in 2011 to offer hope.

QUEEN OF KATWE is directed by Mira Nair and stars David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o. Oyelowo will be recognized at the 2017 Athena festival as the Leading Man Awardee.

HBO documentary head Sheila Nevins will bring conversation after the screening of Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds.

Hulu is previewing THE HAND MAID's TALE starring Elizabeth Moss. Director Reed Morano will participate in a post screening dialogue.

The New York premiere of the documentary DOLORES about union organizer Dolores Huerta directed by Peter Bratt will close the festival.
