Latino Film and Arts Festival NYC
(released
6/17/2019)
By Kimberly Burke
The 5th Annual Official Latino Film and Arts festival is underway. The festival is unique in that is holds semi-finals in 4 different markets made by filmmakers in that market. New York, Atlanta, San Antonio, and Los Angeles will hold semi-final screenings. The Finals and Gala event will take place in Coachella, California between October 11-13, 2019. The New York semi-final screenings will be in blocks from July 7-9, 2019 at the Caveat located at 21 A Clinton Street, 10002. All films in NY are produced by New York Filmmakers.
This year's theme is "Sterotypes End Here". Latinx Filmmakers and Filmmakers of color have for years seen their role on the screen limited to a few lines or supporting roles. This festival is about taking the lead and no longer waiting for the "powers that be" to change the narrative. This year will also highlight the Native Indigenous Spirit showcasing films about Natives from this continent. The festival also supports filmmakers that are non-Latinx, but do showcase the Black, White, Asian, Gay, All who embody a diverse experience.
Filmmaker Danny Hastings created the festival in 2015 with the mission of showcasing America's Diversity.
