Athena Film Festival will be February 27 - March 1, 2020 in Manhattan, NYC.
Held at Barnard College, this will be the 10th anniversary of the festival, a joint initiative of Barnard's Athena Center for Leadership Studies and Women and Hollywood. Films in this festival tell stories of fierce and fearless women leaders.
The stories on screen reflect many women's perspectives and struggles that must be overcome. PICK, a film about a young girl wearing an afro to school and the consequences is an example. Other examples include:
MOTHERS OF - a 10 year jail sentence after suffering a still birth in month 9 of pregnancy.
MILITARY WIVES tells a story of a chorus forming on the military base and the women realizing they can relate on more than harmonies.
DANI is a 30 year old's story of telling her mother her breast cancer prognosis.
Stories about strong figures in our culture will be presented. I AM WOMAN, the story of Helen Reddy and Toni Morrison: THE PIECES I AM will screen at the festival. The film BUTTERFLY is the portrait of the first female Italian boxer to be selected for the Olympic Games. HARRIET tells the escape from slavery and Tubman's transformation into a hero.
In addition to the above films, NORMAL GIRL brings the struggles of intersex people to light. ABORTION HELPLINE, THIS IS LISA is a window into the non-stop calls coming in from women and teens in Philadelphia seeking to end a pregnancy they cannot afford. FUCK YOU is Alice's story of stealing a strap-on and challenging her boyfriend's views about girls. Together they discover something new about themselves.
