WGA Writers Strike in New York

Thursday, November 1, 2007 marked the first day of the strike by the Writers Guild of America against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. By Monday, November 5, there were visible signs on the streets.
Writers on both coasts not only put down their pens, but grabbed picket signs instead. Fourteen studio locations were targeted in California by the WGA West, while one location was targeted in New York by the WGA East.
The WGA East garnered most of the national media attention by having the likes of Tina Fey (30 Rock, SNL) and Seth Meyers (SNL) making rounds and participating in interviews. The picketing was held at Rockefeller Plaza, home of NBC Studios and the shows 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live.
Interestingly enough, the picketing continues on Tuesday, November 6 for the East Coasters at Silver Cup Studios in Long Island City (Queens), where the show 30 Rock is also filmed. The West Coasters will continue picketing all 14 studios.
According to the WGA East website, the union will hold a membership meeting on Wednesday, November 7th at 7pm at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at Times Square. The union president Michael Winship along with the Negotiation Committee will be providing updates on the talks with the producers.
