The Queens Museum will be presenting a screening of the documentary "Nurse Unseen" on May 18, 2025 from 1-3 pm. The screening will be followed by a reception. The documentary is being screened in conjunction with the exhibition Abang-guard: Makibaka.
Nurse Unseen was made in 2023 and explores the history of Filipino nurses at the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic while facing a resurgence of anti-Asian hate in the streets. The Philippines has been a leading exporter of professional nurses in the world. Since 1965, over 150,000 Filipino nurses have immigrated to the U.S. despite little to no representation of Filipino American nurses in the U.S. mainstream media.
Filipino nurses make up 4% of the registered nurse population in the United States. At the height of the pandemic, they accounted for 31.5% of the nation's COVID nurse deaths. The film will explain why so many Filipino nurses left the Philippines to work in the U.S. healthcare system and why they have disproportionately been affected by the pandemic.
The filmmaking team on this documentary is Michele Josue, Director, an Emmy Award-winning Filipino filmmaker and Carlo Velayo, Producer, a Film Independent Spirit Award-nominated Producer.
The Queens Museum is located at Flushing Meadows Corona Park. You can RSVP to attend the screening here:
