DOC NYC started in 2010, so this is the seventh annual festival. It takes place at IFC Center in Greenwich Village and SVA Theatre and Cinépolis Chelsea in Chelsea. The festival runs November 10-17, 2016.
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City is the opening night film on Thursday evening with producers Robert Hammond and Corey Reeser and director Matt Tyrnauer in person at the 7:00 and 7:30pm screenings. The film documents the work of Jane Jacobs as she fought a developer from bulldozing Greenwich Village, Soho, and Little Italy in 1960's New York City.
Special guests of the festival include Kenny Anderson (former NBA star), Neil deGrasse Tyson, Eve Ensler, L7 (band), Doug Liman, Bill Moyers, Carolee Schneemann (artist), Lori Singer, Stevie Van Zandt, Bob Hawk, and documentary filmmakers Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Kirsten Johnson, Barbara Kopple, Raoul Peck, Gianfranco Rosi, and Roger Ross Williams.
Filmmakers Jonathan Demme and Stanley Nelson are being honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards at a luncheon on November 10. Also being recognized at the luncheon, Dawn Porter will receive the Robert and Anne Drew Award for observational filmmaking and Molly Thompson (A&E IndieFilms) will receive the Leading Light Award for a mid-career professional who has served documentary in a role outside of filmmaking.
Another major portion of the festival is DOC NYC PRO, which is comprised of Short List Day (hand picked docs with directors in attendance), Only in New York Meetings (networking sessions), and Pitch Perfect (pitch panels for works-in-progress).
The DOC NYC is an Academy-qualifying festival for short films, so the winning short qualifies for consideration in the Documentary Short Subject category.
