On October 11, 1975, the new late-night comedy show premiered on NBC. The first episode was hosted by George Carlin and the cast known then as the Not Ready for Prime Time Players: included Gilda Radner, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, John Belushi, and Laraine Newman.

The show will have a 50th Anniversary special in February 2025 with a weekend long look back at the late-night sketch show, culminating in a three-hour live primetime special that will air on Sunday, February 16 from 8-11p.m. ET on NBC.
